Sunday Recap | I Chose God, but I Didn't Choose This

Often, when we choose God, we may not be fully aware of the baggage that comes with our commitment. We make a commitment to Him, but we don't get to dictate how God matures us into the person He calls us to be. Just as Joseph didn't realize that his coat of many colors would lead to trauma (Genesis 37), we may not foresee the challenges ahead. However, this hidden knowledge should never give us permission to renege on our commitment to God.

In Corinthians, Paul reminds us that the severity of our adversity showcases our ability to overcome. What we've conquered, others may have been crushed by or lost their minds over. It's not a reflection of our greatness but a testament to how amazing God is and the greatness of His grace. Adversity is sent not just for us to manage but to change us.

Did we really choose God, or did God choose us? If we knew the full extent of what choosing Him would entail, we might have hesitated. This perspective challenges us to consider whether we are truly committed to God's call regardless of the difficulties.

Paul addresses the concept of ministry for personal gain, highlighting that nobody endures pain without a purpose. Our commitment to God has a greater purpose, and we should strive to show others the results of our commitment. While it may appear easy on the outside, the journey is often more challenging than it seems.

Our "why" should be greater than our will. Knowing our purpose reminds us of our commitment even when our determination wavers. When we feel like losing heart, we must remember God's mercy that has prevented us from being consumed by our circumstances.

The call and purpose within us are perfect, but our vessels are flawed. We must not allow our flawed nature to obstruct God's perfect will for us. The call is meant to transform the vessel, not the other way around.

Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 4:12 highlight the profound truth that death works in us so that life can live in others. We will endure affliction, confusion, persecution, and being struck down, but we will never be defeated. Our faith in Christ empowers us to rise above any challenge.

As we navigate the journey of faith, let us commit ourselves to God's call, embracing the challenges and adversities that come with it. By understanding the transformative power of our commitment and remaining steadfast in our faith, we can endure any hardship, knowing that our purpose is greater than our circumstances. Through it all, we find the strength to rise, allowing life to flourish in us and through us.
